Stephen Dell's Collection
Carvin BBS ID: AhClem
With his recent addition of the
BB70P (above, left), Stephen has joined the rank of Carvin bass
collector. And a nice collection it is - kits and Custom Shop models, 4
and 5 stringers, single coils and humbuckers, swamp ash & walnut - nice
basses, and great utility in the various configurations.
||Stephen's newest addition is this BB70P. He says:
"I wanted to try the BB body
style, as I like to hold the bass up high and near-vertical; I love it -
well balanced for my style; this was in stock (took advantage of the
after-NAMM sale); 5 piece maple neck with walnut stripes, gloss walnut
body wings, black chrome. I'm still experimenting, but so far I love the
different tones available, especially with the piezo bridge"
||Here's a swamp ash BK4
kit. Very nice natural finish - very classy. Stephen says:
"Made in August 2002, swamp ash,
black hardware; my first kit, and not knowing quite what I was doing, I
finished "plain Jane" with 5 coats of tung oil. Easy and very,
||I love these kits! And
here's another great example, which was made in October 2002 on the
heels of the BK4. This is the scoop:
"The B5 is swamp ash with 2 coats
of Minwax cherry stain, then 4 coats of tung oil, then lemon oil. Came
out well, I think, pretty much what I wanted, anyway. Despite my fears,
the maple of the headstock and neck took the stain pretty well - almost
a perfect match with the body."
||It's not just about basses over Stephen's
way, either. Stephen says:
"(The DC200 on the right was) my
first Carvin. Custom order in August 2001 - all tung oiled koa,
Floyd, abalone neck inlays, gold hardware, , rounded body, sperzels. Koa
is what turned me on to Carvin, I saw a guy in a local band with a
fretless koa LB and it was the most beautiful instrument I'd ever seen
outside of a museum."
"(The SC90 on the left) was in
stock purchase in February 2002 - Tune-o-matic bridge, 5 piece
maple neck with koa stripes, koa body sides, rounded body, gloss classic
sunburst, black chrome hardware"
